A walk about in Wilmington, Delaware in the neighborhood of Wawaset Park, will give you shade and beautiful landscaping that is so appealing. Built in the early 1900s, Wawaset Park was purchased by the DuPont Company in 1917 for its corporate staff. The development of the site was divided into single-family and semi-detached, and row houses.

Part of the appeal of the neighborhood is the beautiful homes that are all unique and well-appointed. The layout is charming and sapient, thanks to Baltimore architect Edward L. Palmer Jr. (Mr. Palmer was only remiss in his narrow streets- but then again, he had never seen an SUV!) . Walking throughout the neighborhood, you take in the consistently beautiful curb appeal attached to the large lawns that are constantly bursting with colors throughout the spring and fall months.

Wawaset Park is part of a historic district and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. Taking a walk through the neighborhood will transport you back to the Progressive Era. I am lucky to have a friend who lives in Wawaset Park, giving me the perfect excuse to take in Wawaset Park as much as I want!

Next week, I will talk about the boxwoods of this historic site (I love boxwoods). Tune in next Monday for that discussion! Any historical neighborhoods in your town? Let me know.
