During the Holidays, we all feel like we need a break, but to the parent of a special needs child, it is your child that sometimes needs a break. The Holiday season brings everyone together. Holiday parties are a time for music, children running through the house, and families loudly talking over each other to be heard.
My son is on the Autism Spectrum and sound sensitive, and I knew when he had had enough. I would find him in another room away from all the noise. He was thoughtful and knew how to take a break. What if your child can’t express themselves to let you know a break is needed?
With all the festivities, remember to ask the person hosting the party if there is a room or space for your child to have some quiet time. I have found it is the best way to prevent a “meltdown.” Sit with your child for a few minutes, and ask if they would like the company or would rather be alone.
You want the best holiday experience for you and your family, and you should have it, but we all know how crazy it can get. There is nothing wrong with taking a break for an adult or a child.
