The other day, I met a special education teacher who is no longer working in the public school system. She now homeschools a student who is on the autism spectrum. It wasn’t long after we started our conversation that she asked if I had any suggestions?
Being a mom to my son Grayson, who is on the Autism Spectrum, doesn’t make me an expert. I do give examples of how I worked with Grayson over the years to others. I did not homeschool but I did instruct him at home everyday. My suggestion is always to use visuals to explain concepts to all children, especially to those on the spectrum.
I could not get Grayson to dress himself. I made a poster for his room with a picture of him in his pajamas, then a picture of him all dressed for preschool. I was shocked how quickly it worked. Over time I added a picture of him brushing his teeth, that one I should have kept for his teen years and beyond, lol.
You can easily make a poster to help your child see what you are asking him to do. If you do not have pictures of your child, use magazine pictures or print out images you need from your computer.
Please let me know what you think about my idea! What works for you and your child is what is most important. Every parent needs help, so let me know what worked for you!
