Decorating styles have changed so much over the years. There are your tried and true traditionalists, but in this decade, there are many new looks to behold. I fall somewhere in-between. I love mixing new and old pieces together.
In my apartment, I have incorporated a few accessories from my mother’s home. The small cast iron cat bank was my mother’s as a child. The bank is from the 1930’s and was produced by the Hubley Manufacturing Company. I cherish this bank, and it sits on my nightstand in my bedroom.
The other items I hold dear are the old photographs of my mother and her father. My grandfather was a chef, and his portrait shows him in a chef’s cap holding one of his decorated cakes. The large horizontal black and white photo is of my mother at a Christmas party in 1956.
I think the smallest photo was the biggest surprise when my mother gave it to me. My mother is pictured with Gene Autry. Mr. Autry was nicknamed the Singing Cowboy; he was an actor, songwriter, and singer. He was visiting the military base where my mother was living. She was thrilled to meet him as a young girl.
I am thrilled to have such meaningful items that add history to my home. What do you treasure from your family’s home? Let me know!
