I have visited Old Town Alexandria since the 90’s, but my reasons for traveling to this charming city have changed.  Originally it was to visit Columbia Fertility Associates, so we were not focused on food.  Because I have my handsome son due to our original visits, I can now focus on food.

I waste no time scouting out the best restaurants.  I love suggestions, but my latest fine was all me.  I walked into King & Rye located in The Alexandrian Hotel on King Street and I was seated at a table near the kitchen by myself.  The atmosphere was upscale with southern hospitality.

The staff was delightful.  My waitress, Destiny, was well versed in the menu and suggested the Shenandoah Valley Chicken.  The sweet tea brined chicken with Beauregard squash, pumpkin puree with chicken jus. Jus is a specific type of sauce made from the juice of the roasted chicken.  I was in a food fog; every bite of chicken was moist with a flavor I can only describe as perfection.

My dessert selection was Destiny’s favorite, and she was wise beyond her years.  So, I ordered her suggestion, chocolate peanut butter bacon bar.

This decadent sweet concoction is made with Skrewball peanut butter whiskey, caramel, and crispy bacon.  Do I understand where one ingredient began and another ended? No. But what does it matter when every bite is heavenly?  You will love King & Rye!
