No, I am not homeschooling but I do want to acknowledge the amazing moms and dads who are. The amount of discipline it takes is impressive. I only had to aid my son is doing his homework. Any parent knows how hard it is to keep children on track when it comes to schoolwork. The loud huffing and puffing, the long faces, and the persistent whining are enough to drive a parent to eat candy in the pantry. Or drink.
I had a special-needs son who had to be reminded to refocus every 10 minutes. If I had had to homeschool all day every day, it would have been quite difficult. Marijuana wasn’t legal at the time! My patience would have been pushed to the limit.
I don’t have a degree in education…nor do most parents…and yet they are now playing the additional role of schoolteacher. The teachers who are at home and not in their classrooms are getting a good laugh, i’m sure. They know how hard the job is on a daily basis. I am sure after the teachers have a little chuckle, they will also be sympathetic to the parents. In addition, I want to really give so much credit to moms or dads who are home all day with preschool children. I remember being at home with my child when he was a toddler and sick. All I wanted was to take a break. When Dad arrived home, I could run to the grocery store or at least drive through a Starbucks for a coffee drink.
There are parents at home right now who can’t take a break. I admire all the mothers and fathers who are tired but remain patient. I admire them for their dedication to the young children they are helping to cope with these unique circumstances – a pandemic. I give thanks to the parents who are shaping the young minds of tomorrow. You should feel good about yourself and what you have accomplished. Bars will re-open soon!
