“No one’s personality is suited to the transformation from health to sickness.”  – Unknown Author

I wish I knew who said this.  If you recognize the quote, please let me know.  I think it’s a very significant quote when dealing with illness.  It’s so difficult to understand the emotions of the ailing person.  Friends, relatives, and caregivers are at a disadvantage when giving support and advice.  You will never do or say all the right things.  There will be times when you think you know what’s best, but yet, again and again, you may hurt the sick person’s feelings.  Remember, no matter what, you can’t read another person’s mind.  You’re doing the best you can in a difficult situation.  Don’t be afraid to ask, “What would make you more comfortable?”  “Do you need some alone time now?”  Try not to get your feelings hurt if they seem to be unreasonable.  It’s very difficult for some people to ask for help.  And keep in mind the quote, “No one’s personality is suited to the transformation from health to sickness.”

Let me know what advice you would give to a caregiver.  Have you been a caregiver and had your feelings hurt?  Why?
