Gold ring

My mother Bernice died of Alzheimer’s at the age of 82. She like most older parents left me with a lifetime of possessions.  I went to our family home to begin the process of cleaning and purging.  Everything was covered in dust from furniture to small figurines.  As I walked from room to room feeling more overwhelmed, I entered her bedroom.  I sat on her bed and looked around planning out how I would begin the process of organizing her belongings.  I felt sweat beginning to form under my clothing.  It was so hot in the house.  My father had covered up all the vents with aluminum foil to save on the electric bill.  I know heat rises so my parents bedroom on the second floor and was a hot spot.  I am sure National Geographic Society has written about my parents bedroom for its unusually high temperature.  As I was sitting on the bed I was positioned across from my mother’s large mahogany dresser with a carved glass overlay.  Above the dresser was a matching ornate craved mirror showing my willed image.  I decided to open the drawers of her dresser.  I knew all the contents, I though.  I opened the bra drawer first and her cross your heart brassieres were stacked perfectly.  I decided to take the contents of the drawer and place it on her bed.  As I did I realized there were boxes hidden under her bras.  Next drawer held her silk underpants and more boxes.  Every drawer was the same, and now I had all her clothes and more boxes than I could count on her bed.  I opened all the boxes which contained costume jewelry from the 1940’s to the present day.  What was I to do?  I can’t keep all this jewelry.  I collected all and off I went to a wonderful resale shop in Millsboro, Delaware.  The shop owner was ecstatic and bough every piece, except a pink enamel pair of earrings.  I just couldn’t sell them.  Then I drove to Chardon Ltd. Jewelers in Georgetown, Delaware.   I had seen a gold dome ring in Chardon Jewelers.  It was a new ring but I hoped it was still there. I walked in and carefully looked for the dome ring.  The owner came over and asked if I needed assistance.  I told him I had seen a certain ring and wanted to purchase it to wear in memory of my mother.  He knew the ring I spoke of and walked me over to the case.  It was there.  A smile covered my face and my aching heart filled with a proud moment.  I would make my mother proud knowing I had a special reminder of her on my hand.  I could look at the ring and know she would be thought of everyday.  I purchased the gold dome ring and placed it on my right hand ring finger.  I have worn the ring everyday. If anyone asks about the ring, I tell them my mother bought it for me.  And, she did with her money and my desire to keep her close to me.
