“OK, here we go!” These are words I said a hundred times when my son was a little guy. Those words came before all the fun activities: a day at the beach, pool, park, bike riding, and more. But now, my son Grayson, is all grown up and attending Lynn University. Upon picking him up from college for this unexpected break, my attitude was positive because I knew this isolation was just temporary. In my mind my outlook was, “OK, here we go!” And that statement had a positive connotation. To me, it was the next phase of our new reality and I was going to impress everyone (including myself) with my positive attitude. I would arrange a new routine for Grayson and I, that would include exercise, healthier foods, meditation, and strict times for writing, class time and homework.
We began with organizing closets because I am so ADHD and need to be distracted from the new schedule daily. The meditation never happened because we live in a 716 square foot apartment and just our breathing gets on each other’s nerves. Meditation is supposed to help us humans relax, right!?! We are going to try again. And class schedules? Grayson is excellent because he is online at the exact times of his classes on campus. Me? Well, I start my writing and then it is time to prepare lunch. Then we get back to work and Grayson, reminds me he needs help with a practice job interview. Will I help him? Of course, there is no one else living here but us and the cats, Mimi and Poppy… but then the cats suddenly need attention and start crying. I give them some catnip. If the apartment gets any smaller, I can always roll and smoke the catnip! Don’t worry, I’m not there quite yet.
Each day ends with a new promise to myself, “I will do better.” I wake up the next morning, put both feet on the floor, and I say, “OK, here we go!” Then I remember we’re still in isolation. I lower my tone and my expectations. I say it slower and with much less enthusiasm, “O – K … h – e – r – e … w – e … g – o.” So, I want to know how you’re doing? Are you sticking to a schedule? or are you going “batty?” Drop me a comment and let’s share and compare.
